Golden Living Center

My stomach dropped when I first heard about going to the senior home; it stressed me out at first. I also had difficulty understanding why we had to go there for our psych of monsters class. But now, I can see how the Golden Living Center relates to our class. I have never really had a problem talking with old people either it’s just that I thought it was going to be awfully awkward having to talk to some old stranger for an hour. I also had thoughts of the person not liking me.

After the first time, I was actually excited about who I got to talk to because he was so interesting. I knew it would be easy to spark conversation the next time i visited. Jack had plenty things to tell me, such as, dropping bombs in world war 2, hosting local T.V. shows, being a weatherman in 4 different states, and playing college football to name a few.  Jack was nice too so I wasn’t afraid to ask questions and he wasn’t annoyed to answer them either, I guess I wouldn’t be either if I was him because he has alot things to talk about but little people to talk to.

After I started going to Golden Living Center and talking about it in class, I realized how this project related to our class. Because no one wanted to go there already showed how old people are sort of stigmatized and looked at as uninteresting, grumpy, and stinky. I never looked at every old person this way because I knew there was some cool old people out there but the thought of an assisted living place is uninteresting and awkward to many. Our service project helped me understand that assisted living places are friendly and inviting. I also realized that most old people want to talk to you because they are people too and need to socialize and express themselves. I’ve learned that you should not stereotype all old people because most of them are friendly and social. I have also came to the conclusion that if you chat with any random stranger; it is easiest to talk with an old stranger.

Golden living

The service project was to go to golden living center which is a elderly care home, we would be talking to the members and be asking them questions. Our goal was to find out through word of mouth what it was like back in the days where we were not alive. We would go to the center once each week to meet with them we would talk to them for an hour each visit. The people I talked to seemed nervous to really open up and tell me anything, i feel like they were tired because they kept shutting there eyes. Some seemed excited to see us there and wanted someone to talk to and enjoyed the company. Either way being that old you have to had learned alot and experience much and learning from ours elders has always been an effective way to gain wisdom.

Golden Living

The experience at Golden Living was interesting. At first, I really did not want to do this assignment, but after the first time, I really enjoyed it. Listening to life stories of other people is really cool. Mary, the lady I interviewed had some really interesting stories to tell and each time I went back I was more and more excited to learn more about her. A lot of people think that elders are cranky people, but not the lady I had. She was always so cheerful and she was willing to share anything I asked her. Overall I think the experience was a good idea.

Golden Living Center

My experience at the Golden Living Center was something I did not expect. At first I was very skeptical about interviewing elderly people about their lives; it seemed kind of personal and if I was put in their position I probably wouldn’t have wanted to talk to a stranger about my life experiences. The first time we visited was the ice breaker and it turned out very good. I met a man named Matt who had plenty of interesting stories that made time go by fast. After the first day I did no longer dread going to the Golden Living Center, it was almost just an easy way to pass class time.
My experience at the Golden Living Center reflected on what we learned in class because old people truly are stereotyped. All the characteristics of an old person were there but it is nothing that anyone should judge for. They are far more interesting people than we are and I’m happy I got to be a part of this learning experience.

Golden Living Center

When I first heard about that we were going to go to the golden living center for class every Tuesday for the rest of the semester, I thought to myself “Oh god”. I immediately stereotyped going there and how it was going to be. I figured that they wouldn’t really care of what we had to say, or that they would just assume we were loud and obnoxious teenagers. Little did I know, by the time we arrived, they were thrilled to see us.

As I walked into the building I was a little nervous about what to expect. I am normally good talking formal to new people that I am meeting, but I usually don’t randomly talk to people of this age unless they are my grandparents!  Once I finally met my person, she did not have any aggression towards me, thankfully.  It hit me that once I was talking to my elder that she was so excited to be sharing her knowledge to somebody younger and be able to talk to a new face. Besides bingo, it seemed as if I was the highlight of her day. Seeing that her face would light up every time I strolled into her room made me realize how much she appreciates the company of even a quiet kid like me.

Senior Center

When we look at the elderly, what do most of us think? I know what I think and see. I see cranky, senile, crabby, think they know all, and a few other things. But after going to the nursing home and talking with a resident there, I realized that sometimes they just need someone to talk to. They are not always mean or crabby or senile. Sometimes all they thing to is to just be listened to and ask questions. They like telling stories.

My resident was actually a very interesting lady. She had a lot to say and a very interesting story to tell. At first, I thought this would be a bad idea because we stereotype people and sometimes do not give some of them a chance. After meeting my resident for the first time I actually had a really good time. I asked her questions and learned a lot from her. She built a cabin all by herself in the woods just only 30 years ago. That takes some talent since she is already 90. I hope someday I can do something that great.

Golden Living Center

The purpose of going to the Golden Living Center was to get to know a group of people who are often stigmatized. These older people are sometimes stigmatized as rude, that they smell and just plain old. But when we went to Golden I found out that older people aren’t always what people stigmatize them as. They have many different stories to tell people and they are just happy to be talking to people, especially younger kids. Another purpose of going there was to get stories about their lives and to put them in a book for their families and friends to see. Overall Golden Living Center was a good experience.

Service Project

When I found out that we had to go to the nursing home I felt two things, one was scared and the other mad. I was scared because I didn’t really want to go talk to people who I did not know and ask them questions about their lives and what it was like being old. I thought if I were to ask those questions the people I was interviewing (Aldean and Mugs) were going to get mad at me for asking or sad because I was bringing up parts of their lives that no longer exist. The reason why I was mad when I found out that we had to go to a nursing home was because I didn’t think we had to and wasn’t sure in how doing so fit in with the class. After going I then realized that it has a lot to do with the class. Older people are seen as being mean and they don’t want to talk to anyone, but I found out they are just the opposite. The two ladies that I got to spend time with and talk with, turned out to be two wonderful ladies with a lot to say. I loved talking with them and they loved being able to talk with me, so I like the experience I got to have by doing something like this and I am happy we did it.

At the beginning of golden living I did not want to go there, I thought it was a pointless assignment because how could elderly people be monsters? Also how could people see them as monsters?

As we went there more and more I began to see how people would find an elderly person as a monster. I think that a lot of my generation stereotype the older population because they look different due to aging. I also think that people hold a lot of stigmas when it comes to the elderly. Today’s teenagers as well as some adults see old people as useless because a majority cannot continue to provide to the community or for their family any longer.

I think that what people don’t see is that the elderly provide more than money, they provide knowledge, and history about things they have lived through and how their lives are so different from ours now. The elderly are people who have a lot to say and by us going to the golden living home we are how they voice their opinions and we are someone to share their thoughts with.

I think that sometimes the elderly feel forgotten or like they don’t have that voice anymore but I feel now that I have gone and listened that I have truly made a difference in their life. I know I will walk away remembering the things we talked about and I hope that the residents will take as much out of this that I did.

Anger

Anger is defined as an emotion related to one’s perception of having been offended or wronged and a tendency to undo that wrongdoing by retaliation. some physiological effects of anger are accelerated heart rate and rising blood pressure and adrenaline. Some ways to tell if people are angry are there face may get red or have a distorted look of rage of there face or tensed up and hands clenched. Anger can have a very negitive effect on poeple reactions to events, when very angry your cognitive processess go down and people may yell and act violently that in the future they may not usually do and may regret. When argry people try to make themselves seem more threatening by making loud noises, attempting to look larger and staring. Being able to deal with angry in a positive way is very important because all humans will go through anger and is a needed emotion for survival and if suppressed can have very bad effects on the person.
Anger can release the monster in all of us, many of us can probably remember times where we lost control and went overboard because of anger. Being able to deal with it is a nessesity in life to be able to function properly in society. Anger is the nasty part of all of us but is very common and everybody has to work with it, if dealed with right the monster will never be revealed.
